The challenge was to design and build a new branch of Gavs Auto Supply along a National Highway in Infanta, Quezon Philippines that is uniquely different, energy efficient and functional.
The structure has a simple floor plan and massing. The ground floor serves as the display area for the shop, while the second floor serves as the storage. Tucked in a very small lot, the strategy was to create a structure that will attract the attention of the motorists and entice them to stop and buy. The owner agreed that a structure that blends with the existing buildings will not do that, not to mention the size of the building itself. By employing 2-tone aluminum cladding that reflects the color of the sky, the structure stood out and attracted attention. The simple massing, a box on top of another, also created a contrast with the local architecture. Energy efficiency was achieved with the use of daylighting and natural ventilation. The skylights at the northern portion of the building made full advantage of daylighting with minimal heat gain. As a result, artificial lighting is only used towards the last 2 hours of the building's daily operation. The large openings at the front and back allows for maximum ventilation by catching the northeast monsoon or the prevailing wind. Although the second floor is used for storage only, windows were also strategically located to let daylight in as well as natural ventilation.
