Located on a small lot on the canals in Venice, the existing 1100 sf house had a delapidated charm on the outside but the inside was cramped and unusable.Clien desires and the zoning code dictated that the size and location of building envelope near the canal remain unchanged. A large studio space and spa deck were added on the second floor near the rear of the residence. The scope of work involved the removal of both interior partitions and parts of the second floor to create an interior space that connected from the living area near the canal on the first floor through the central stair to the second floor studio at the back of the house. The house's small footprint is made large by voluminous birch plywood clad open ceilings.Connection to the canal itself was established by continuous operable glass doors on the ground floor that lead to a garden area adjacent to the canal. Large concrete pavers allow for the ground space in the garden to be maximized and still allow for planting. The second floor is also an open plan, with the master bedroom open on one side to a second floor deck that overlooks the canal, and on the other side to the central stair and the studio and spa beyond. Privacy is afforded the master bedroom and bath by a cast resin wall and a movable steel and bronze panel that acts as door to both bedroom and bathroom.Hand wrought and specifically designed steel pieces provide both functionality and a tactile warmth throughout the house.
