vPPR Architects have completed works to a neglected backyard of a beautiful converted pub located in a Conservation area in Mile End, London, involving the addition of two new spaces - one for work and the other for play - and a patio and roof terrace.
A new living room fitted with a discrete compact shower room has a fully glazed roof letting in huge quantities of light and providing a flexible space for different activities: reading a book, dining with the glazed doors open to the new patio, playing with the children. Across the garden is a new office space with a wc room and utilities storage with a garage behind. The office provides the client with a perfect place to focus on work while keeping an eye on the children across the garden.
Continuous paving contexts the two rooms which open up completely through sliding folding fully glazed doors for the summer months to create seamless transitions between inside and outside.A spiral stair leads to the unexpected sun-drenched roof terrace above the office where the timber decking wraps up to form in-built benches containing storage and planters. At a detail scale, the project’s identity is created through a subtle diamond grid that permeates the floor and roof terrace balustrading.
