A garden shed with chicken coop was commissioned by Anita and Mike Arguelles in Vancleave, MS. The building is located on four acres of land surrounded by a dense pine forest and overlooking a small pond brimming with lily pads.
The challenge for this garden shed was the relatively small budget, $7,000, and the need for an interesting form comprised of simple and locally sourced materials. The solution was to keep the footprint of the building simple and compact, add a canted wall, a large south facing cantilever to block the intense sun, and interesting bracing allowing ample natural light into the coop. The main materials for this project were corrugated metal, corrugated plastic, dimension lumber, and Hardie board.
During the design process a structural puzzle emerged concerning the southern cantilever. The cantilever spanned 8 feet, half the width of the building, and 25 feet wide. The solution was to design a triangulated truss that distributed the weight back to the main supports and allowed the cantilever to extend unimpeded.
The main entry into the building is a large roll-up door on the north façade, allowing heavy equipment in and out, and providing ample light for working on small-scale projects. The chickens, all ten of them, are happily roosted in their new home with an expansive pond/field view.
