Play Places/Natural Places
Richmond, BC
Client: City of Richmond
Completed 2008Site: Garden City Park is a new park
located near Richmond City Hall and Richmond Centre Mall. The Play Environment is in close proximity to several public schools and is
adjacent to a
forest, an arboretum and a new pond.Problem Statement: To
develop a site-specific solution
for a play environment that encourages creative play. Outdoor play
spaces have the potential to establish a connection with natural
systems and living organisms that change with the seasons. This contact
can enhance physical and cognitive development, and encourage
imaginative and spontaneous play and exploration.Design Solution: space2place undertook a
collaborative design approach for the play environment at Garden City
Park. Workshops and design exercises were used to gain a clear understanding of the specific needs of the project, and
to promote awareness of the findings among child-care professionals and
decision makers. This approach gave us a unique ability to create and
inspire change in outdoor play spaces, resulting in site-specific
designs that foster healthy development of children and strong
connections to the outdoor world.Awards:2008 Design Exchange Award - Best in Category - Landscape Architecture2009 Canadian Society of Landscape Architects - National Merit Award
