The vision for the development plan for the 20.7 hectare site is a comprehensive community sports and recreation center integrated with new civic center and regional park for the Gaoxin District within the southern portion of the City of Chendgu. The development program includes a multi-use 5,500-seat arena, large gymnasium with naditorium, recreation hall for badminton, table tennis, squash, fitness center, yoga and additional training facilities. In addition, the master plan includes Outdoor Recreation and Sports Facilities including 4-lane Track, Soccer Fields, Basketball, Softball, Tennis and Bike Path.
The master plan vision for Gaoxin District Sports Center creates a new sport and recreation destination that is about the “quality of experience.” This is inclusive of the integration of arena and gymnasium as a single building complex with outdoor sports venues within a park natural park setting. Key to the master plan vision of the project is the quality of public spaces that become a strong amenity to “placemaking.”
The iconic building form of the project is inspired by nature and the majesty of the ancient heritage tree - a living landmark within the landscape. Inspired by the structure of the tree the hard exterior skin protects the interior living organism from the elements. It stands strong as a landmark within a living eco-system; a place to congregate within its shade and enjoy the seasons transformations.
A civic and entry plaza is created at the mid-point public right-of-way between buildings. This provides a clear address and efficiency of vehicular and pedestrian flow. The extension of the road to the north of the small parcel provided vehicular access to the civic plaza, VIP drop-off, underground parking and service access to both venues as well as the Service Center co-located with the track north of the plaza.
The outdoor sports facilities are organized within the extension of the natural environment and open space network. Synergies are provided between the gymnasium badminton and squash with outdoor tennis courts on the small parcel while outdoor basketball courts are provided adjacent and within the protected cantilever roof of the arena.
