The Gantsho family elders came to us looking for help in reimagining their family home. They wanted a home that reflects their childhood whilst also catering for the future, a home where they’re grandchildren would also find solace in. This home is located in Queenstown, officially Komani, a small town in the middle of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, roughly halfway between the smaller towns of Cathcart and Sterkstroom. The town was established in 1853 and is currently the commercial, administrative, and educational centre of the surrounding farming district.
Our client wanted a home where they can host gatherings during important holidays like Christmas whilst also having an intimate homey feel during the year. The design of this home was born of the challenge to design an entertainment center that also feels intimate and homey to its permanent residence. This is a double story home that overlooks an extended yard that’s been designed for family functions and ceremonies. At the back of the house is a private “braai” (South African BBQ area) gathering space for the family’s private leisure. A home that was rooted in family history and tradition whilst also aspiring to cater for future generations.
