Located on broad sweeping ranch lands overlooking a lake, Gambel Oaks Ranch was designed to blend into its surroundings and is not visible from any public roadways. This objective was achieved by designing a low-profile roof following natural contours which nestles the predominately one story home into the scrub oak canopy.
Entrance to the site is choreographed to slowly reveal the residence in a series of glimpses through the trees culminating in an arrival court that constrains panoramic views. Private areas within three distinct Cor-Ten boxes are organized as a family compound to contain the master suite, guest suite, and garage. Public gathering spaces defined by the Cor-Ten forms flow effortlessly outdoors for entertaining.
Gambel Oaks Ranch residence was awarded LEED Gold by the USGBC for its innovative use of horizontal loop field GSHP, PV, HWS, and radiant heating/cooling slab thermal control technologies.
High Performance | Smart Design Features:
Oriented east-west following the cross slope of the building envelope, this high-altitude home has been optimized for passive solar and encourages cross-ventilation through a series of inter-connected spaces.
Deep south-facing overhangs control hot summer sun while minimal openings on the north side conserve heat during winter.
Wood ceilings and cabinets executed in beetle-killed lodge pole pine offer an organic counterpoint to the crisp steel and concrete.
Rock excavated from the site for foundation installation fills wire-mesh gabion baskets for retaining walls, fireplace surrounds, front entry wainscoting, and a custom-built firepit.
Abundant natural daylighting reaches deep into the interior spaces assisted by light shelves that deliver reflected illumination to the occupants.
