The gallery is situated at the center of Sofia to the monument built in 1981 called "1300 yeras of Bulgaria".
For 30 years the monument has not received an unambiguous assessment of yourself. Public opinion of it has never been unambiguously.
This is a real problem which is stated on all social levels. At the level of institutions, public opinion and the media.There are 3 positions on the matter:
1. Remove the monument
2. Restore the monument
3. Appropriate interventions that seek to solve the conflicts - this is what I take as a challenge and opportunity.
The gallery was designed in a way that works in a favor of the monument - brings excitement around him and now people see the gallery and the monument in a single composition. The idea is the people to look at the monument in a diferent way and humanization of the whole place. Metallic elements protruding from the monument are a link between him and the new building. A volume of glass, completely shrouded in a "spider web" of metal. New metal structure is light gray to white, it reflects the sun shines, but metal showing of the monument is dark and matte, which distinguishes them one of another. An essential part of the solution is a new, beautifully landscaped square space, sunken below the surrounding level.There are seating and meeting places, surrounded by varying exposure outdoors, and art shops.
Vertical sections show the square with the main entrance to the building are shifted one level down from the surrounding area. Thereby the monument has been made,too. There are aesthetic and functional relationship between them.
The building which I designed is a gallery of contemporary art, but this is not a typical gallery, but rather a multi-object with features similar to a museum - exposure, art gallery of free access and a commercial gallery - all rolled into one and additional activities - a large hall offering 230 seats, suitable for conferences and rental, cafeteria with 60 seats and 3 art shops . The idea is for a large concept and various investors interested in this idea.
All exposure is situated underground. It is designed that the area is not be divided into separate rooms with a corridor, but to be a common space divided by levels. The levels can be divided according to specific needs - for different types of exhibitions, as the capacity and the admission to separate them for visiting of special guests.
