The project involves the complete renovation of an entire floor of a historic building overlooking the main pedestrian street of Cuneo’s old town, where two residential units previously existed, characterized by a fragmented and inefficient layout.
The intervention led to the creation of two new, fully rethought units, each with its own distinct character and an optimized spatial distribution.
The apartment facing the pedestrian street is developed according to a long and narrow configuration, a defining feature that guided the main design choices.
Despite the reduced dimensions, every space was custom-designed and carefully organized to ensure functionality and visual continuity, enhancing natural light and facilitating movement throughout the apartment. To optimize space and free up the larger areas, the kitchen was placed in the narrowest point, coinciding with the entrance corridor, transforming a simple passageway into a functional and identity-defining space.
The kitchen runs along a slightly angled wall, a design gesture that creates a visual invitation toward the living area and generates a telescopic effect, capable of amplifying the perception of depth and spatial continuity. This solution guides both the gaze and movement within the apartment, making the transition between spaces fluid.
During the renovation, the decision was made to remove the layers of ceilings and suspended ceilings that had accumulated over time, bringing to light a valuable coffered wooden ceiling, now a central element of the project. The recovery of this original feature helps define the character of the apartment, establishing a balanced dialogue between the historic fabric and the contemporary intervention.
The result is a compact yet strongly characterized home, in which functionality, spatial perception, and the enhancement of existing elements become the guiding themes of the project.
