Craig Gaulden Davis master planned a renovation of the school site, façade, entry lobby and public spaces for Gaithersburg Elementary School. The school community’s desire for the design to embody their shared values of sustainability, ethnic diversity, inclusion and the natural environment of their site is found throughout the design. Upon entry, a world map is printed on a porcelain dry-erase board for students to write their name next to their country of origin in a welcome ceremony for new students. Concrete block walls were refinished with stained wood and feature geometric displays for student art. A wood plank ceiling with an organic edge leads students from the lobby to the classroom wing.
The project provides a 21st century learning space environment at the front door of an immigrant community.
