“We hope that the club takes its place in the Helsinki cultural landscape and contributes to widening the scope of it. G Livelab is a meeting place where diverse high-quality music finds its audience in the right surroundings. Our ideology is that the club must provide the right setting for each performance to reach its potential in the best possible way.” says Tanja Douglass, the CEO of the club.
G Livelab is a tailor-made club for The Finnish Musicians’ Union, with the highest possible focus in experiencing and performing live music in a variety of genres. The ground-floor Livelab is linked with the new Radio Helsinki studios on the 4th and 5th floors and a Sauna + Lounge on the top floor of the building.
The spaces are built around the elements typically found in a city: brick, concrete, asphalt, glass, copper, steel, leather, ceramics and plants. These elements have been repurposed and woven together in inspiring new ways with artisanal handicraft. The end-result is multi-dimensional, multi-temporal and multisensory.
The musical biourbanism of the club has a genetic memory. Every brick is resonating from the feeling of the hand that lay it. Every inch of the welding remembers with love the sharp hand and demanding eyes which grew it. The seams of the copper sheets are standing proud and the soft metal has a patina from music. The structural molecules of the surrounding city are floating and regrouping freely in the club, as notes and rhythms.
A tram is swimming by without making a noise. The grass is growing inside. The drum-set is bubbling with gold. Old bricks have gathered to spawn by the crossing of tram tracks in the middle of the club. The stage is made from hundreds of pieces of laminated glass. Fazioli is happy.
Space is beyond time – a simultaneous ruin and the construction site of eternity.
“After a long time in the making, it’s thrilling to be able to show G Livelab to the public”, says Tanja Douglass, the CEO of the club. “We hope that the club takes its place in the Helsinki cultural landscape and contributes to widening the scope of it. G Livelab is a meeting place where diverse high-quality music finds its audience in the right surroundings. Our ideology is that the club must provide the right setting for each performance to reach its potential in the best possible way.”
