FW. House is
located in a typical residential area in Tokyo. The site was extremely small;
45sqm in total with a strict set back regulation. Our goal was to find a
practical solution to accommodate all the varieties of functions like living
room, dining kitchen, bedrooms, working room, and service space within a
compact volume with comfort.
We built the
maximum volume that the setback regulation allowed on the site. As a result,
the roof shape of the house became a pitched roof inclined to the south and the north. In this maximum
envelope, we placed three closed volumes vertically shifted with different
functions inside- dining kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. These volumes have a
distance of 30cm to each other and so create a void “left over space” used for
the living room, working room and service space that can be experienced as one
big vertical continuous space.
The outer
surfaces of the three volumes were clad with galvanized steel panels
independent from being in- or outside, while the inside of each actual volume
were painted in different colors. This color and material concept gave the
volumes even more independent character.
Being inside of one of those volumes there is the illusion of being in a
place near the outside. The contrasting whiteness of the interior walls of the
maximum envelope gives a feeling of being at home.
