Located at the heart of Huangpu District in Guangzhou, the Huangpu City Exhibition Hall occupies a prominent waterfront site along the Wenchong Stream, directly facing the major urban artery of Huangpu Dong Road. Positioned at a key gateway to the city, the project is envisioned as a landmark that embodies and catalyzes regional renewal. As a civic anchor, the exhibition hall is designed to be a dynamic platform showcasing Huangpu’s ongoing urban transformation.
The architectural concept draws deeply from Wenchong’s rich shipbuilding legacy and its cultural significance as part of the Maritime Silk Road. Inspired by the form and spirit of a ship's sail, the building is sculpted through three fluid, double-curved surfaces. These iconic forms suggest the motion and energy of wind-filled sails, establishing a bold and recognizable silhouette on the skyline.
The sail-like structures are clad in gradient fritted white glass, which transitions from a more opaque finish at the top to increased transparency toward the base. This design strategy enhances the building’s luminous identity from a distance while simultaneously fostering a porous connection between the exhibition spaces and the surrounding public realm.
By activating the waterfront promenade with open and inviting interfaces, the design cultivates a lively civic presence—one that encourages public engagement, celebrates the riverfront lifestyle, and affirms the exhibition hall’s role as both a cultural destination and a beacon for the district’s future.
