In 2016, RHAD, along with a multi-disciplinary team of urban planners, engineers, and economic and tourism experts embarked on the expansive task of re-designing the visitor experience of Nova Scotia’s Bay of Fundy. The Fundy Discovery Site is located along the Salmon River in Truro, NS where a tidal bore rushes through twice daily as part of the powerful tidal cycle. This resulted in the comprehensive Master Plan of the site. Since completing the Master Plan, RHAD has been engaged by the client to provide further consulting services for other projects on the site including the public washroom pavilion, picnic tables, benches, etc.
Following the lead of the Master Plan’s recommendations, the site has been built up to include an amphitheater, walking trails, and a natural playground. Phase 1 (washrooms and playground) came in under expected budget. The next phase on the site involves the construction of a pedestrian bridge which will span over the Salmon River. Due to budget and scheduling restraints, the project was implemented throughout several phases to accommodate the needs and abilities of the client and stakeholders.
The goal of this project was to develop an expansive reimagining of the site. The project consisted of an active site plan, one main building, and two smaller ones to be constructed out of glulam beams and clad in corten steel for durability and sustainability.
