Molin Nuovo delle Balze with its altitude of 1064 m above sea level is the highest of the complex system of 165 mills that gravitated on the Marecchia water catchment basin. The mills, from the point of view of their diffusion, are medieval and in particular they developed, in the Montefeltro and in the Vallle del Marecchia basin, in the early Middle Ages when these areas, with the consolidation of the feudal system and the demographic increase, bought a regional individuality that is at the base of the future anthropic physiognomy of the region. The mills with their ancient role of attraction, repulsion and demographic integration tell the story of the places by binding them to a cultural unity with the community that settled there. The history of milling technology is ancient and has led, through historical routes and geographical areas, to choose different solutions depending on the available energy sources. The mills of these areas work with milling systems, called hydraulic ones, which draw the energy necessary for the movement of the mills by the force of the water.
