This small courtyard garden is the crowning glory of a modern house remodelling in Fulham, London. Along with an atrium, front garden & rooftop, the courtyard provides a gripping focal point via sliding glass doors, sumptuously lit & well kitted for an alfresco lifestyle. Photographs by Clive Nichols.
A floating raised bed with its deep shadow gap & a sleek granite waterfall & pool, a cantilevered bench, Cedar screens, turquoise pots & luscious foliage plants intermesh atop a tiled surface which continues in the same material & level as the adjoining kitchen in an architectural indoor-outdoor flow.
For the busy clients, the lighting makes night usage an immersive indulgence, interacting with the kitchen via lights inside pots, downlighters onto art creating dramatic shadows & radiance below the bench.
Full moon Maple, Mexican lilies, Desert willow, Paperbush, Phormium, Acorus & Bamboo create sculptural multi-stemmed focal points year round, planted in 2 zones; shaded & sunny. Along with the Cedar cladding, the Bamboo adds key seclusion from neighbouring gardens & windows.
Although small, the highly detailed courtyard is teeming with captivating nuances, the reflection & sound of water, warmth of lights & canopies of bold plants, topped by dining, seating, heating & irrigation facilities.
