An Ode to the Stool; the commonplace plastic stool in Singapore, as in anywhere else in the world, receives little attention or any celebration. By using the stool, the pavilion changes the reference point of this object. Using the mundane to invoke the sublime.
The scale of the pavilion denies the context of the megalopolis bay, creating an interiority that transforms the pavilion into something akin to a temporary tabernacle. A place to contemplate architecture for a temporary festival devoted to architecture.
The design was selected as the winner of Archifest Pavilion design competition 2014 organised by the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA). It was installed for 3 weeks at the Marina Bay Event Plaza in front of the Marina Bay Sands integrated resorts as a public exhibition and event space for the festival.
Like a fugue in a musical piece, repetitive shifts, small variations and recapitulations creates sequences of spaces and textures. Stool became textured ceiling and halls, stool became permeable walls, stool became filigree columns.
As in the fascinating exposed movement of a watch, the spirit of the pavilion’s detailing wants to engage the viewer primarily through its tectonic. It engenders intent observation of its geometry, details and connections. In so doing the key elements of architecture is both encapsulated and promulgated.
The pavilion was detailed for its eventual disassembly and re-use. Minimal non-invasive detailing leads to maximal integrity the original stool. All 4000 stools were returned to its original design purpose. From stool to pavilion then back to stool. The epitome of reuse.
Employing transformative concepts in SCALE, OBJECT and SPACE , the pavilion discusses ideas on DISPLACEMENT, REFLECTION,REUSE AND POINTS OF VIEW. It hopes in this way to expand the understanding of what Architecture is for the festival.
