Is it possible to change behavior toward resource management? That is what the Frontier Project Foundation is set out to accomplish, and their mission is coming to life through the Frontier Project. The Frontier Project Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to meeting the environmental challenges facing Southern California. The foundation aims to educate resident consumers, commercial builders, and sustainability advocates that sustainable design is economical, efficient, and inviting through the construction of the Frontier Project, a 14,000-SF demonstration building. In addition to highlighting sustainable building techniques and technologies,
the Frontier Project is a natural light-filled showcase of sustainable
architectural materials, including terrazzo floors sparkling with recycled glass
chips, cabinetry and flooring of rapidly renewable bamboo, and highly textured
concrete walls contrasted with the warmth of responsibly forested wood veneer
ceilings. In a community with enormous growth potential, the Frontier Project is
dedicated to providing a forum for community-wide education about the choices we
make when we build and the dramatic effects of those choices on our
environmental systems. The
building demonstrates how an inviting architecture can help foster interest and
creates
functional spaces for school field trips, vendor exhibits that showcase
sustainable products, conference space for lectures and seminars, and public
accessibility for daily tours.
The dynamic shape of the building invites visitors to explore all of its
architectural components?from the composition of the energy efficient walls to
the various roofing constructions.
The
interior spaces are open and fluid to maximize flexibility and interconnectivity
for ventilation and daylight. The fluid space guides visitors to constantly move
and experience the building from various perspectives. There are educational
displays and signage throughout to give visitors an understanding of all the
green strategies, which is part of the Frontier Project?s educational mission.
The building is pending LEED platinum certification.
