Create home-away-from-home from an undistinguished pair of rooms.
While only being utilized part of the year, this New York pied-a-terre, adjacent to the Frick Museum, needed to be more than just a hotel suite. And yet, everything had to be easily dissembled and put away when the apartment was not in use by the owners in order to accommodate their other family members and friends.
We created an organizational spine that runs the entire length of the apartment in the form of a single long, ebonized oak custom cabinet crafted in Italy. All the functions typically offered in the many rooms and closets of a house were consolidated and concealed behind a uniform set of doors. A variety of appliances and functional elements such as the refrigerator, pantry, wine cooler, bar, entertainment area, laundry and desk activate create rooms depending on which doors are open. When closed, the sleek cabinetry provides a rich, minimal backdrop for this comfortable apartment.
