This single-family residence is located on a barrier island on Florida’s West Coast facing the Gulf of Mexico. The program includes a multi-level residence for a family of four. The family’s main living spaces are located on the first elevated living level and also include a children’s wing and quarters for a live-in assistant. All living spaces enjoy spectacular views of the Gulf of Mexico and nearby Heron Lagoon. The master bedroom suite, exercise, library and guest quarters are located on the upper most level. These spaces also include panoramic views and access a roof top landscaped terrace for outdoor living activities. The project is designed to unfold behind the trees upon entry down the formal drive that is on axis with a low wall anchoring the sky and horizon. The project is essentially a concrete pavilion with a glass curtain wall. Colored cubes that are carefully engaged within the purity of the concrete frame and grid identify the various program functions. These “cubes” house the functional areas of the house and are defined by color as well as form. Concrete bridges connect the “cubes” on the interior. The colors were chosen to reflect colors found on the underside of a common shell found on the beach within the site.
