“Date night at Fred’s”
In Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood, Fred’s Italian restaurant offers something quietly compelling: an invitation to slow down and settle in.
The dining room embraces intimacy and a softness where nothing feels over-designed. Instead, there is a quiet confidence in restraint, allowing the food, the company, and the atmosphere to take precedence.
It is the kind of place where first dates linger into second bottles of wine, where weeknight dinners turn into small celebrations, and where the line between occasion and everyday life gently dissolves.
Warm and diffused lighting, composed in layers, softens the room into a gentle glow. Feature lighting from A-N-D Light in support of local partnerships. The Column pendant light was specified over the bar and private dining table.
The palette is earthy, romantic, and understated. Materials include Verdi Alpi marble paired with Calacatta Viola marble, oak veneer millwork/wall paneling and leather banquettes from Mastrotto. Coco dining chairs and bar stools are from Cantarutti. Seating is arranged to encourage closeness; conversations feel private, moments feel held.
The project presented a unique spatial challenge: a long, narrow floor plate with natural light limited to the front entrance. Beyond this threshold, the interior unfolds with minimal access to daylight, requiring a thoughtful approach to atmosphere and perception. The design responds by cultivating a sense of warmth and repose, carefully balancing light, material, and proportion to soften the depth of the space. Through subtle spatial strategies, the room is composed to feel expansive and inviting—gently extending beyond its physical constraints while maintaining a cohesive, enveloping ambiance.
The restaurant spans two floors with the main dining area on the upper level and a private dining room on the lower level. 2,500 SF floor pace.
