FRED is a 16-day art festival in Cumbria, UK in which over 60 artists from across the UK and beyond take their art outdoors.ThickSpace is a series of installations that engage the public in altered sensory experiences. The intention of thickening space responds to the high speed, hyper visual environments that have become increasingly ubiquitous in today's world. Inhabiting ThickSpace stimulates a change in the way people interpret their surroundings by reorganizing the hierarchy of sensory perceptions. While the idea for ThickSpace developed as a response to the intensity of urban conditions, we are primarily interested in questioning the status quo of the dominance of the eyes in shaping our surroundings. Fred_Thick took part in the festival in 2008 by experimenting with the relationship between people and nature. The installation was carefully hung from three trees in the middle of a beautiful forest managed and protected by Woodland Trust (UK's leading conservation charity). In an environment in which the natural is kept at a 'safe' distance from the visitor, Fred_Thick offers an alternative interpretation for inhabiting this environment. One is brought closer to the 'natural' by a man-made intervention.
