The Client: Owsley Brown Frazier
The creation of the Frazier History Museum evolved under the leadership Owsley Brown Frazier (1935 – 2012,) a renowned Louisville businessman and philanthropist. As his private collection of historic firearms grew, and he acquired the collection of the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, England, he seriously pursued his dream of building a museum where the public could view more than 5,000 artifacts of human history.
The Challenge
Owsley Frazier owned four historic, four-story structures, located in Louisville’s West Main Street Historic District, which he envisioned transformed into a major museum. The buildings required a sophisticated renovation to create a secure environment for the collection, respect the integrity of the structures and appeal aesthetically to museum visitors.
The Solution
K. Norman Berry Associates (KNBA) is known for their strong focus on interpreting their clients’ aspirations. KNBA determined that pursing investment tax credits for the historic structures would be a part of the design strategy. KNBA’s understanding of the challenges and complexity of museum projects was critical in the development of the Frazier. Extensive evaluations of the structures were conducted to ensure they could support the museum weight load. Solutions to issues ranging from climate control to seismic events, exhibit layout, lighting and security were major concerns. KNBA led the effort with the various contractors to retro-fit the existing structures to accommodate museum tandards and integrate all the functional systems. Construction logistics unique to the Frazier included building an addition on top of one of the existing structures, tying the two originally discreet structures into one, preservation and re-use of existing historic materials and issues regarding conservation of the collection’s artifacts. KNBA functioned as the overall project facilitator,
to collaborate with exhibit designers and identify sources who could fabricate the specialty architectural elements needed. The firm provided thoughtful and practical leadership while managing a very aggressive schedule, to achieve the dramatic vision of history that Owsley Frazier wanted to share with the community.
