Franky is a continuation of EC3’s interest and practice in cross-disciplinary design. Due to the limitation of the stage size and proscenium of the Sai-Wan-Ho Theater, it was decided that the three required scenes would be accommodated in one fixed stage set. Collaborating with A:I Architecture Innovativ in Hong Kong, we have created a multi-level set with the TV Studio situated above the Living Room.
To meet the modest production budget of US$25,000 and to minimize waste, we developed
the set by utilizing metal scaffoldings, that allowed the set to be assembled quickly and be repurposed after the performance.
In front of the scaffoldings, translucent polycarbonate panels provided the backdrop of special lighting effects and video projections. Large TV monitors showing pre-recorded montages added a multi-media dimension to the overall production value.
