The private residence, a weekend retreat sits in the countryside. It has a gross area of 250 m sq (2691 sq ft) and is set on a flat plot surrounded by agriculture. It is aligned to the cardinal points of the compass and towards the best-uninhibited views. The house sits in a formally laid out garden which is a continuation of the linear arrangement of the building plan. This anchors the building to its context and merges it spatially; allowing an easy flow visually and physically between the internal and external. A concrete 5x5m grid forms the context for the distribution of accommodation in a specially open manner internally and forms the basis of the elevation expression. The interior within this framework, is functionally defined by material differences. The floor and ceiling finishes delineate the difference between perimeter circulation and internal functional within a single space. The walls delineate enclosure in a combination of infill in-situ concrete, wood paneling which matches the door finishes and a facade primarily of full height glass sliding doors. The entrance is via a generous covered carport, that occupies 1/3 of the ground floor footprint. It forms a void that punches through the rectangular form and offers visual porosity. This arraignment is repeated and mirrored on the upper floor where the living room is situated and on the ground floor along the axis of the staircase.Ground floor consists of cloak, storage, service, guest bathroom, study and a large kitchen dining room. The latter two of which face out onto a terrace, reflective pool and garden beyond. The glass sliding doors stack in front of the study opening the dining and kitchen area completely to the terrace. On the upper floor two en suite bedrooms with their walk through closets are entered off of the open living room. The innovative façade screen of operable vertical cedar timber slats offer a varying degree of privacy and light penetration to the bedrooms. The house balances a rural sensitivity with domestic comfort in a sensitive setting, inspired by vernacular tradition through proportions and materials.
