In a residential neighborhood of Montréal-Nord, an existing apartment building has been transformed and extended to create the new Foyer Pelletier, a home for two group units welcoming children aged 6 to 12. The project brings these units together under one roof, forming a coherent living environment that blends into the surrounding streetscape while offering a protective and structured setting for young residents.
The intervention doubles the area of the original building to organize two distinct households, each with its own living room, dining room and activity space in a warm, domestic atmosphere. Shared spaces – including a bright kitchen, offices for clinical teams, meeting rooms and a calming Snoezelen room – support daily therapeutic work and everyday rituals, balancing moments of collective life with quieter, more private intervals.
Architecturally, the project builds on the existing structure while reconfiguring it in depth. The volume is clarified, openings are reorganized and a contemporary extension frames a simple planted backyard, creating a sheltered outdoor space connected to the interior by generous covered terraces and a luminous white perforated-steel stair. In turning a former six-plex into a specialized residential facility, the project combines code upgrades, new seismic structures and efficient building systems with a gentle, domestic architectural language, offering a safe yet open daily environment for children in Montréal-Nord.
