Los Angeles’ ForYourArt, founded and directed by Bettina Korek, describes itself as a “fluid platform to produce and distribute artists’ work.” The concept of our design for their hybrid gallery/office/flexible space is to be a pop-up for pop-ups: a flexible system that can easily transform to make a gallery into an office, then back into a gallery with infinite possible variations of configuration in between.
We call our approach “exuberant thrift”: using inexpensive materials and flexible systems that can nonetheless project an identity and elegance. The central elements are versatile steel frames with heavy wood and laminate table surfaces (including grooves and openings for cable management) to accommodate different configurations for display and work.
The simple ceiling lights - which feature a common (but rarely exposed) industrial style fluorescent lighting element with exposed ballast – are functional, but also form an idiosyncratic and recognizable element that remains consistent despite the ever-changing space below. The nylon curtains with button-hole handles were designed by Iris Anna Regn.
The graphic systems for ForYourArt – all designed by collaborator and graphic designer Brian Roettinger – are similarly conceived as modular, with direct elements that can operate at any scale and context.
