In recent years much of the urban development in Munich has been governed by extremely rigid development plans. Similarly the volume of the structures for the scheme "Am Hirschgarten" was largely predetermined. By superimposing what appears to be a strict grid network, the varying building heights are put into relation and the individual structures become part of a whole. As a result the development area acquires a degree of stability and spatial awareness. At a closer look, the rigidity of the grid is loosened by introducing a variety of materials with different appearance. Also, on the ground floors, the relaxation of the grid pattern ensures that, to an appropriate degree, the prominent feeling of a rigid structure is broken.
