Forest Offices is the first high-end office building of Debrecen (Hungary). The core of the building is encompassed in a unique, futuristic glass shell just like a professionally designed PC hardware is wrapped up inside a stunning computer case.
Debrecen - the second biggest city in Hungary is more and more popular with investors due to the research and development success of its university and its dynamic economic advancement in the past decades. The new office building that quickly became the symbol of the region aims to serve the needs of the newly arrived international companies. The priorities of the building were: a high level of comfort, environmental consciousness, sustainability, feasible implementation and last but not least a sui generis design.
“The architectural concept was inspired by the indispensable symbol of our modern world: the computer. Inside a computer there are microchips and circuits that function like a professionally designed engine. The outside is a result of industrial design, on which the different switches, slabs and indicators of a product appear in unison representing a brand. This is exactly why the inside concept of our building is highly comfortable, environmentally conscious, energy efficient and sustainable solution which is packed in a uniquely designed box.” – BORD Architectural Studio
The building is located in the new business centre of the city right next to the city park and the university campus. Though the location of the plot is perfect, it had to be considered that it is very near a residential area and is also surrounded by public buildings. The foremost aim was therefore to define the right scale and volume and protect the intimacy of the residential buildings. Regarding the size and the environment, the building is divided into three volumes, which are connected to each other by corridor links. The height of the office wings and the number of floors are adjusted to the measures of the surrounding buildings.
The facade is open from the front and closed from the direction of the residential area. An intensive green belt is created on the edge of the property offering further protection for the people of the neighbourhood. The entrance is situated in the zone that links the blocks together. An elegant lobby, and a spacious restaurant and café will serve the office workers. Each wing has its own staircase and servicing areas but the wings are permeable on all floors as well. On the higher floors there is a circa 20.000 m2 flexible office space.
The office building is transparent and simply constructed. The three rectangular office wings and the volumes connecting them are monolith reinforced concrete structures. And yet, the building is well perceptible and has a distinctive image. On the short sides of the office towers there are characteristic, V shaped inwrought reinforced concrete stiffening walls that give the whole building a special, playful atmosphere. The same pattern is the basic conceptual element of the glass facade too: on the surface of each short side of the office towers, in front of the reinforced concrete facade there is an outer glass layer attached to a steel frame thus adding a zigzagging motif to the facade. This multi layered facade does not only reflect light abundantly but present the building with a remarkable appearance too.
The unique combination of the structure, the facade and the design provide a perfect heat protection to the building supporting its energy efficiency. Forest Offices is the first rural building in Hungary that received LEED Gold certification. In 2020 it was recognized by an ALUTA Award for Excellence for its innovative façade structure.
