The «Kashtan» DublDom home, as it’s called, so impressed the audience that many started dreaming about their serene residence surrounded by the forest. Eventhough nature offers you a peaceful environment, it also poses a challenge for your dwelling. While planning this elevated home, we considered how the trees will affect the property and home experience. Our goal was to provide a home to harmonize with its surroundings.
Typically, our firm prefers one storey houses, but in this project, we decided to explore. We still believe that on small plots and for year-round living, a one-story house is more convenient. When you're surrounded by a tall forest, this provides another solution for creating an unusual appearance and new positive emotions that a person will experience inside the house. In such conditions this house looks proportionate, doesn’t block the neighbors view and doesn’t dominate a person. This solution preserves all the comforts of a single storey house, allowing you to live in one single plane and avoiding the standard problems of multi storey houses, such as air convection and sound insulation. Also, additional space for stairs and corridors is not lost.
The space under the house usually doesn't have a meaning, so we’ve turned it into a functional and almost free space. Keeping the standard arrangement of the foundation piles for the DublDom, we increased their height, made neat stiffeners and sheathed with a wooden rail.
In the layout of the basement, we’ve made through passages and niches, so the effect of detachment of the house from the ground is created. We purposely didn’t make one large room under the house, but turned it into a play of light and shadow, closed and open spaces, corridors oriented to tree trunks, storage areas.
A non-standard sequence of actions for installing a house gives a great advantage in organizational and economic terms. We have an area of more than 100 square meters, which is easy to convert into a heated and operable space in the future. There are already supporting structures and a roof, what remains is only to only to build walls and fit out the space. If desired, a living room, garage, storage areas, workshop or a summer kitchen can be implemented within this space. The initial build out budget is increased only by the additional height of the foundation piles, which is a marginal cost if not practically free in total construction hard costs. Due to the factory manufacturing and modular technology, the installation of the house at the second floor level is the same as at ground level, despite the fact that in traditional construction the cost and timing of work on the second floor are typically higher. The experience of walking up the wooden stairs you come into the house, where the windows overlook the crowns of trees. It seems that you are off the ground and live in a tree house.
The «KASHTAN» DublDom itself is almost standard. We were lucky that we were able to pay more attention to the basement and not waste time developing the details of the house. For more interaction with the view from the window, we made a kitchen set right in front of the windows. It turned out to be a convenient area for work or meals, where it’s convenient to cook and serve at the same time, or work on your laptop and warm coffee on the stove.
In the bedroom, we used horizontal double-sided glazing for the first time. Lying on a high bed, you can fall asleep and wake up with a view of the forest. At the same time, such glazing is easy to close with curtains, and the space under the glass can be used for furniture. Wide window sills serve as convenient shelves for books, flowers or candles.
The rest of the interior is built around the window views. In the office there is a table with a view of the forest, in the living room there is a soft area near the stained-glass window, light furniture at the edge glazing doesn't block views of the world around. We tried to convey the romance of forest life and travel through the interior. The house has a lot of dark oak furniture, leather details and black metal materials, there are a lot of antique sports equipment and themed posters in the design.
Designing a house surrounded by a forest is nothing short of a challenge, but it is also one of the most rewarding experiences. This experimental thought flourished into a design process, which enabled our team to create a stunning dwelling that works well with its environment. Such a home provides you with a relaxing environment filled with natural beauty that you can enjoy day and night. As you can see, the perfect house surrounded by the forest is within your reach.
