Architecture dictated by the local context
The architectural concept for the new football and rugby arena being designed in Aleksotas is based on the existing building axes and the potential of the site.
The first floor of the building is recessed, clearly marking the main entrance and creating a cozy public space in front of the arena. The hall volume is integrated into the lower L-shaped part – this is not only a structural solution but also a functional element: the roof of the building becomes a viewing platform offering impressive views of the Aleksotas aerodrome and the city of Kaunas.
Sculptural façade expression
The large volume of the arena is architecturally broken up by a dynamic façade design featuring a striking yet harmonious diamond pattern. This composition creates an impression of lightness and transparency, while also serving an aesthetic and functional purpose by connecting and covering the spaces. An additional accent is provided by structural plaster, divided into smaller sections and supplemented with LED lighting, which will give the building a playful and lively appearance in the evening.
Infrastructure for sports and the community
The three-storey, 16,000 m² A++ energy-rated building will house a multi-purpose football and rugby pitch (105 × 68 m) that meets international competition standards. The first floor will house the necessary facilities for athletes, including changing rooms, doping control areas and sanitary facilities. The second floor will feature spectator stands with at least 1,000 seats and administrative offices. The third floor will house a modern sports club with additional facilities for athletes, coaches, active residents and visitors to the city.
More than just an arena – a public space for everyone
This arena is not just a sports complex, but also a new centre of attraction for the community. Planned cafés, community rooms and roof terraces will provide opportunities for non-athletes to spend time here as well. Viewing platforms overlooking the aerodrome will become an attractive space for families, young people and visitors to the city, while a spacious car park (with around 185 spaces for cars and buses) will ensure convenient access.
Positive change for the environment
The project will fundamentally transform the currently abandoned area, which is now home to unused administrative and storage buildings.
A modern, sustainable and publicly accessible arena will replace this site, creating value not only for athletes but also for the entire Aleksotas community and the city. This is an investment in an active, vibrant and modern Kaunas.
