The Folkhouse is a contemporary extension to a character pre-war house which sits proudly at the crest of the Balmoral hillside. Created for the parents of an SLA staff member, the design of the house adopted a very personal approach which speaks directly to the family’s daily rituals and individual living patterns. The modest, ornate rooms of the original cottage contrast theatrically with the new house which is, by comparison, a decidedly contemporary piece of architecture. Its dynamic, steeply pitched gabled roofs create dramatic ceiling volumes internally, and this change in scale reveals and unites the transition between old and new.
