‘Foamspace’ won the 2015 Storefront for Art and Architecture Street Architecture competition and realized a temporary work of Architecture for the New Museum IDEAS City Festival. Foamspace explores the speculative relationship between decentralized infrastructure and the production of the built environment. It stored value generated during the festival in ‘Foamspace Coin’ while organizing a community of architects to mobilize to another site. The coin is a token of community membership while fostering participation in the proposition of and funding for future projects. The installation was made entirely of factory-standard EPS geofoam blocks that were resold on the secondary materials market to start a fund. The blocks additionally served as a visual metaphor for the decentralized infrastructure, the Bitcoin Blockchain.
Foamspace is being mobilized to the Chicago Architecture Biennial for an installation that further explores the synergies between value production, infrastructure and space through cryptocurrency mining and the blockchain.
