Fluxwork reimagines St. Louis’s Columbia Building as a dialogue between past and future. Hovering above the two-story remnant of the 1892 landmark, the project introduces a cantilevered, lightweight office volume supported by three sculptural tapered concrete columns and a reinforced elevator shaft. The preserved base, once part of a nine-story Romanesque structure designed by Isaac Taylor, is reprogrammed into a civic hub with a lobby, auditorium, and rooftop garden, transforming a neglected fragment into an active social anchor for downtown.
The new upper structure accommodates a flexible, data-driven workplace designed to adapt to the evolving culture of work. Lower floors support focused tasks within enclosed studios, while the upper levels open into collaborative zones linked by a sculptural scissor stair and intermediate mezzanines that encourage informal gathering and vertical flow. The hybrid steel-and-concrete system allows long-span cantilevers and column-free interiors, while the perforated metal façade filters daylight and urban views, creating a shimmering veil that shifts with light and perspective. Inside, exposed structural elements are paired with wood ceilings and fabric partitions to balance clarity with warmth, enabling spatial reconfiguration between private and communal settings.
Fluxwork merges architectural experimentation with environmental and social performance. By retaining and repurposing the Columbia Building’s surviving structure, the design preserves cultural memory while minimizing embodied carbon. The perforated envelope functions as a passive shading device, optimizing daylight and thermal comfort, while landscaped terraces and a rooftop garden extend workspaces outdoors to promote wellbeing and reconnect occupants with nature. Behavioral simulations and network analyses guide the workplace organization, allowing spaces to evolve in real time in response to shifting team structures and work patterns. In uniting historic preservation, digital design, and adaptive spatial systems, Fluxwork becomes both a memorial to St. Louis’s architectural legacy and a prototype for the future of sustainable, flexible urban workplaces.
