The challenge was how to articulate a modern farmhouse vision on a small site in an urban setting that incorporated sustainability and family-friendly design on a modest budget.
The design maximizes use of the small site and capitalizes on the property’s corner location by breaking the building’s mass into separate structures that creates a 3-sided courtyard, which incorporates the adjacent side street into the sense of space. By breaking down the forms of the house, both the interior and exterior spaces feel larger than if the structure were one larger mass and strong indoor-outdoor relationships were created. The forms and natural materials reflect Scandinavian and Shaker influence in their simplicity and provide a calm respite from the exuberant environment nearby.
