The site is on a hill near freeway in the middle of Taiwan, which is owned by Mr. Hsieh who wants to have a holiday house for retired life & farming. A main issue is it, a southern Fujien traditional building has been existed here for 50 years, which now turns a ruin cause out of any maintenance.
San-Yi, a tiny mountain town located the middle of Taiwan, which is famous of woodcarving. By contrast the humid & hot weather of southern city where Mr. Hsieh lives now, the altitude here is higher so that the weather is more comfortable. People live a slow-moving life here.
The needs of the client are quite simple, but the budget is tight to have a living room, a kitchen, 4 bedrooms, two bathrooms & a space for storing farm tools & shower. We eventually have chosen shipping container to achieve needs.
By repairing a part of this existed brick ruin, the first floor turns a work area where people can take a rest here after farming. We want this brick ruin is one of memories of this land by standing here, except being demolished.
We combined 4 forty-foot containers & a twenty-foot container to a two floors space which is lifted beyond the brick ruin. The strategy of lifting the steel box let people can have the surround views of this land & also allow them to get inside from different layers.
The first floor is work area with a toilet & laundry. Then the second floor is two bedrooms, a bathroom, a main living room full of light & a balcony for smoking. The third floor has two bedrooms, a bathroom & a terrace for activities.
