The best way to experience Amsterdam is from the water. The floating bridge allows pedestrians to see the city as if on a boat, then submerges offering a perspective from just above water level and finally rises up to provide an expansive panorama.
This lightweight, mobile and floating structure is constructed with three spanning elements that are connected by moving hinges. One hinge is weighed down to float partially submerged. The other hinge is playfully supported by a buoyant sphere. This results in a bridge that constantly moves with the tide and current of the Amstel river, producing a subtle motion reminiscent of the surrounding barges. The floating sphere is either transparant or reflective depending on the viewing angle and acts as a mirror for the tourist boats passing under the bridge.
A seating area is located on the central element of the bridge that gently slopes facing south. Here steps are integrated into the surface of the bridge and create an ideal space for people to enjoy a coffee in the sun with views down the river. The open nature of the seating means that it can also be used for small performances or lectures. In this way this unique space becomes a great addition for the entire city.
The construction of the bridge creates a form that is constantly adjusting to its surrounding and gives people crossing the river a singular experience. The elegant shape of the bridge creates a poetic sculpture in the river and provides people with a dramatic journey and unparalleled viewpoints as well as a place to enjoy the surroundings.
