k20 Architecture recently entered its
submission for the Flinders Street Station international design
competition run by Major Projects Victoria. This international
competition was to seek out ideas to regenerate the Railway station and
surrounding areas which is located in the heart of Melbourne along the
Yarra River.
Working in collaboration with UK practice
Ryder Architecture, the k20|Ryder design proposal investigates ideas on
the regeneration of the area by reconnecting the CBD with the River and
developing a new Melbourne Precinct. The design response enhances the
public realm along the riverfront and across the Flinders street
interface between the city and the Railway, whilst providing a new
central hub station as a vibrant destination point incorporating the
latest thinking in transport design.
The integration of a new wildlife corridor
extends form the riverfront across the railway and out to the City’s
edge, raising public awareness of sustainability. Botanical garden
walks over the contained railway system take reference from Melbourne’s
arcade typology, whilst facilitating an innovative passive design which
maximises natural light and ventilation, would have enabled the new
Flinders Street Station to be a world leader of inner city
sustainability independence.
