The two-leveled apartment is situated in the attic of an old townhouse in the city center of Ljubljana (Slovenia). It was designed for young couple with aspirations for modern, functionally furnished apartment with effective use of space.
Relatively long and narrow existing floorplan demanded a thoughtful distribution of spaces and furniture. The main idea of the project was to create unified, opened and fluid space with no unnecessary spatial partitions and to consequently take full
advantage of available daylight. In this way, kitchen, dining room and living room with working corner, form a single room. Bathroom is placed centrally, near existing plumbing installations and chimney shafts and visually and functionally divides living spaces from bedroom.
Second volume, which encloses existing chimneys, contains small guest toilet; its position specifies entrance area and creates working corner on the other side.
Double-height dining room becomes the heart and soul of the apartment; it has the purpose of meeting and socializing with modest touch of hedonism. The gallery space provides additional bathroom and multi-functional room, that can be transformed into a guest room,
extra working area or small children's room. The clients expressed clear preferences for maximum use of storage space due to appartment's attic position, which results in many pitched walls and varying ceiling heights. So all the niches, corridor and room walls are filled with
custom made floor to ceiling wardrobes. Even the place under the stairs is used as a wardrobe. Lower furniture elements are placed only in living room area to optically widen and open the main living space.
Moreover, the only empty wall serves as a display for many artworks from clients' collection.
In general, furniture does not only have only one role, to be the perfect example of arts and craftsmanship. It surely tends to perfection and uniqueness, but on the other hand each piece serves exactly the purpose for which its was built and placed on precisely chosen place.
Main element of dining room is large, extendable dining table, which satisfies the criteria of flexibility, conditioned by couple's vibrant social life and numerous visits of their big family. Wooden cladding covers the wall in entrance space, but not only
for the decoration: its folding hooks can be used also as multi-purpose hanger. The design principles reflect minimalistic approach through wooden furniture design as well as reduction of materials and colors. The prevalent color is white
(with addition of some grey furniture elements) with oak wood combination. Large format oak flooring gives the appartment slightly rustic feel. In contrast, most of the furniture is made of fine brushed oak wood, which gives the apartment a modern touch.
