In the span of a generation, Oakland’s First Church Campus has transitioned from a campus serving a single congregation into a community center serving thousands of Oaklanders. Dozens of local non-profit organizations use the campus for daily operations, as a gathering place for their membership, and as a place to organize, celebrate, and serve. This conceptual redevelopment of the campus is designed to assist the First Church community in determining whether it can continue to accomplish that mission, while also meeting Oakland’s greatest need: providing new affordable housing for Oaklanders.
The concept for campus rededication for homes is a project by Christopher Weber Architects to assist the First Presbyterian Church of Oakland’s Buildings & Grounds Committee in planning for the long-term needs of its historic campus and the ministry needs of the surrounding community. It is an effort to determine whether the church can assist its neighbors in Oakland by providing room for new, affordable homes, while maintaining its existing ministry of sharing its campus with its neighbors.
