Firepool Pump House was built over mediaeval lime kilns in the Victorian period and is now Grade II listed. The Pump House provided the railway station directly behind with water from the canal for the steam engines. Our proposal is to convert the building into a café and restaurant by the addition of a circular brick stair/lift tower to the rear and a café conservatory overlooking the canal at tow path level. The form of the sectional steel water tank on the roof is recreated in glass to provide the upper floor of the restaurant with panoramic views across the town. The Pump House evokes the industrial history of the site and provides a splendid focal point for the mixed-use development at Firepool Lock.
