FiftyThree is a space to create - a combination of work space, library, home and forest. Following a creed of honest material use and understated confidence, +ADD created a space with an open layout that promoted teamwork and collaboration. The selection of materials: walnut wood, blackened steel, glass, and concrete complemented by accents of marble became the palette to begin drawing what would become an office space that reflected the essence of the clients. In a very simple yet organized fashion they created a variation of spaces that enhanced the everyday working experience, but also developed new methods of working. For example, the wood platforms in the center of the space consist of an elevated space that has the function to gather people but also allows for a different perspective.
By changing spatial perception the designers believed they could trigger different behaviors and approaches toward the regular meeting experience, which does not solely happen around a conference table. Both client and architect understand the design process, and therefore had similar concerns and input. The result is a space that invites you to linger, share ideas and create innovative products. The office space is located in the 60 Hudson Street Building, formerly known as the Western Union Building, a full block telecommunications building built in 1928-1930 and designed by Ralph Walker. Both the interior and exterior of the building, now one of the most important internet hubs in the world, were designated New York City landmarks in 1991.
