Ruwais Fertilizer Industries (FERTIL), a Fertelizer and other Chemicals producer is one
of ADNOC's group of companies in Abu Dhabi. Sustainability is at the core of their business.
Their aim for this project was to achieve the first ever 3 Pearl Rating for all Buildings
under Estidama PBRS rating system for green buildings.
There are 6 buildings in the compound of various architectural typologies: A Gatehouse building,
a Mosque, a staff training building, an archive building, a spare parts warehouse with offices
annexed, a chemicals warehouse, in addition to a water feature and landscaping all in the
compound of Non-Process Buildings (NPB) annexed to the new Fertil-2 Plant that was built by
Samsung C & T.
The Six buildings were have achieved 3-Pearl rating under the Estidama Pearl Building Rating
System (roughly equivalent to LEED GOLD).
The project sustainability strategies include passive architectural features aimed at reducing
heat gain and heat island effects including: high Albedo roof, window shades, external walkways
and parking shades, high insulation walls and roof, high insulation and selective transmissivity
glass windows. Other sustainability features include Building Management System, efficient air
conditioning, daylight and occupancy sensing for light efficiency, efficient water features and
landscape, Indoor environmental quality and user comfort, travel plan, waste management,
recycled materials, recycling waste water, Safety and Environmental Policy, High Efficiency
Appliances, Operational sustainability and more.
It is worth mentioning that 2 of the buildings, the Mosques and the Spare Parts Warehouse
have achieved historical firsts by becoming the first Mosque and the first Industrial Building to
obtain the 3-Pearl Design Rating.
