The Joel E. Ferris High School Gymnasium, Health and Fitness Complex was designed to replace an existing gym facility that no longer met physical education and athletic programs consistent with the standards of Spokane Public Schools. A 1,775-seat main-events gymnasium and 200-seat auxiliary gym form the heart of the new 54,500-square-foot building. The two gyms are flanked on one side with a fitness, weight and multipurpose mat/wrestling room; facilities for locker rooms, staff offices and athletic storage are located at the opposite side of the gyms.Public access to the building is from 37th Avenue, a primary east-west arterial. A 34-car parking lot provides supplemental parking and a bus loading zone directly adjacent to the main public entrance. The complex is the first phase of a long-range master plan that will include the re-development of the entire school grounds, originally constructed in 1963. A village-style architectural theme is envisioned for the re-developed campus: Building clusters will be arranged in a manner that creates secured open courtyards while providing natural daylight to all areas of the school.Located in a heavily wooded area at the southeast corner of the site, the Gymnasium, Health and Fitness Complex was positioned to allow for the future school development to connect the facility with an existing 1,000-seat auditorium building on the northeast corner of the campus. The wooded site creates an exciting backdrop for the varying roof forms and detailing of the brick and concrete-block façade. Glass curtain walls, metal paneling and exposed wood beams provide a simple yet dramatic expression in reinforcing the village theme. The Gymnasium, Heath and Fitness Complex exceeds the requirements of the Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol, which is based on the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS). The facility is designed for the effective application of daylighting, energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, commissioning, sustainable materials and site responsiveness.
