This project, situated in the city of Yazd, presented a fundamental challenge for our design team: how to create a structure within a context so rich with history and culture that would not feel alien, but rather become a harmonious and dialogical part of the city? Our response was a deep inquiry into the hidden layers of the city's architecture and daily life. We aimed to create an intermediary, not a one-sided message—a space that would foster interaction between its users and neighbors, ensuring the building would not be perceived as an uninvited guest. The core idea drew inspiration from Yazd's symbolic deep shadows, guided by a philosophy not to invent something new, but to transform and reinterpret the existing reality.
In this process, we limited material use, proposing a texture distinct yet familiar to the environment, and grounded our design approach on three fundamental principles: to preserve what is valuable, recreate what has been lost, and eliminate what is disruptive. These three steps were our guiding light, respecting the past while moving towards a contemporary future. The result was a building that emerged as a response to the latent forces of its site; a response in tune with the spirit of the place and its surroundings, leading to a purity in geometry and materials.
The created space, in constant interplay with light, displays the beauty of its forms and evokes a sense of simplicity and authenticity within the building's fabric. Ultimately, a form materialized that is both a continuation of Yazd's architectural history and a contemporary statement. In terms of sustainability, we adopted a logical approach based on passive strategies. Focusing on the external envelopes for increased shading, employing anti-sun glass, and reducing the opening surfaces on the outer facades were among the measures that, in harmony with the environmental wisdom of this land, help minimize energy consumption. In summary, this project sought to understand the spirit of Yazd, presenting an architecture that is rooted in tradition while looking firmly towards the future.
