ENIX Museum of Migration
Rotterdam, Netherlands
Architect: MAD Architects
Located in Rotterdam’s historic Katendrecht district, FENIX is a new museum dedicated to the universal story of migration. The project transforms the former Fenix II warehouse, a 16,000-square-meter industrial building dating from 1923, into a contemporary cultural destination while preserving its strong connection to the city’s maritime history. The site once served as a departure point for millions of migrants traveling between Europe and North America.
Designed by MAD Architects under the direction of Ma Yansong, the intervention is defined by the striking “Tornado” structure, a sculptural double-helix staircase clad in polished stainless steel. Rising through the center of the building and extending above the roofline, the Tornado creates a dynamic public route that culminates in panoramic views over Rotterdam and the River Maas. The element acts as both a circulation device and an architectural metaphor for movement, transition, and human journeys.
The project carefully balances preservation and transformation. The historic warehouse shell remains largely intact, while new spatial experiences are introduced through light-filled interiors, exhibition halls, public gathering spaces, and the expressive vertical connection at its core. As MAD Architects’ first completed cultural project in Europe, FENIX establishes a powerful dialogue between history and contemporary architecture, creating a landmark that reflects Rotterdam’s identity as one of Europe’s most diverse and internationally connected cities.
