DLR Group teamed with Fortune 500 company NRG Energy to design a large-scale solar array at FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins. The design approach for this project looks at the future of renewable energy application and production: solar systems must evolve to be more than panels on a roof. DLR Group's design uses the working solar system as architecture that becomes part of the aesthetic of the stadium, engaging fans to enhance the game experience. The solar systems use photovoltaics and features prominent displays of solar panels in and around the stadium to raise awareness of the commitment by NRG and the Redskins to renewable energy. A branded NRG entry gate into the stadium, a dynamic LED lighting system illuminating the facade of a pedestrian entrance ramp, and a 30-foot tall silhouette of a quarterback dubbed "Solar Man" are all part of the working solar system.

The 8,000 panel (2MW) photovoltaic energy generating system at FedEx Field also includes 800 covered parking spaces. It generates enough power to serve all of the facility's electrical needs on non-game days and provides a portion of the stadium's electricity needs on game days. A six-story pedestrian ramp features a LED lighting system with full color lighting effects and video animations created by 358 diffused media tubes. The project also includes 10 electric vehicle charging stations from NRG's eVgo charging network. Information kiosks in the parking lot and at the NRG entry plaza also inform fans about renewable energy and showcase NRG clean energy solutions. DLR Group provided architecture and engineering services on the project.
