The remodel of this 82 square
foot bathroom began with a simple goal: replace all of the existing pink
fixtures. From that, the main focus of the remodel was on making the tub/shower
a more attractive and relaxing space, with the remainder of the bathroom
adhering to a neutral, contemporary palette the homeowner’s have throughout the
remainder of the house. Due to the bathroom’s location in the house, the
existing footprint could not be changed, which also meant that the arrangement
of the fixtures in the room also needed to remain.
The tub/shower is the largest
item in the room and also the focus of the design. The existing tub is a basic
walled-in tub/shower combo with a sliding door. When using the tub, the sliding
doors enclose the tub area, which is something the homeowner wanted to
eliminate. With the remodel, the aim was to make the tub/area an architectural
element of the room, rather than just something in the corner. This was
achieved by expanding on the alcove the current tub/shower resides in with a
tiled extrusion that “floats” above the floor. Changing the walled-in tub to a
drop-in fixture opened up a larger deck area for various items while using the
bath. A fixed panel of clear glass encloses enough of the shower without
blocking the entire tub.
The opposite wall of the
bathroom houses the sink and toilet. Design elements were kept fairly minimal
with the focus being on custom granite countertop and unique faucets and
lavatories. A white glass-tile backsplash accents the countertop and fixtures.
The biggest change is the addition of a privacy divider between the sinks and
toilet, which currently does not exist. This project is currently
completing construction documents and should be begin construction
shortly.
