Snug curvedly on the 6th floor of the Ziggurat Building in Saffron Hill, London EC1, this art deco rooftop garden, although only 30 sqm, is one of the most unique projects we’ve designed.
Owned by a barrister, who’s an ornithologist & pianist, we were commissioned to develop the outdoor space in 2013. We surfaced the terrace with hardwood decking and black granite, detailed with angular LED strip lighting. There’s also automatic irrigation & a low-voltage lighting system.
Bespoke aperture planters, positioned in a trio overlooking the city, and a pair framing the west, increase depth, allow daylight in & are fitted with LED lights which generate warm ambience. The skyline features buildings such as The Barbican Towers, The Shard, The Cheese Grater & St Paul’s.
Over the years, we’ve maintained the roof garden, and replaced the original Silver birch with wildlife-friendly Cotoneaster. We also installed a living wall with herbs & alpines. In 2024, we replaced some of the perennials with sedges, ferns & meadow plants.
A floating circular planter houses 3 Cotoneaster trees, attracting pollinators in summer & birds in winter. New Zealand species cope well in the sunny, exposed prospect with Pittosporum, Uncinia, Muehlenbeckia, Phormium, Astelia, Carex & Libertia.
To quote our client: “this is a developing experiment”. 11 years on, this gem of a roof garden continues to evolve, as we adjust the living wall planting, prune the mature woody plants & undertake organic upkeep in line with our sustainability ethos.
